CHANDIGARH: The second wave of Covid-19 seems not to be sparing women.
A Covid test analysis by the UT health department after February has reported that 45% females tested positive for the novel coronavirus in almost two months as compared to 42% females from the start of the pandemic in March-end 2020 till February 2021.

Before February, maximum females who were infected were in the age group of 21 and 30 years, the same as in males. In this age group, 2,614 males were infected and 2,090 females tested positive. Before February,13% of those above 61 years of age were infected. Out of these, 1,575 were males and 1,093 females. After February, the infections in the same bracket increased to 17%, with 373 males and 340 females. The data is until March 22.
“This gender difference seen previously during Covid is changing. Perhaps, it is because Covid-appropriate behaviour is not being followed by females now,” said Dr Amandeep Kang, director health services, UT.
The health department has compared the data of Covid patients gender-wise before February and on and after the month. There were 20,275 patients before February, while 4,203 patients’ data was analysed after this period.
The highest prevalence of 23% was reported in the age group of 21 and 30 years in the before February period (first wave), which was reduced to 21% in the second wave.
