The rector and vice chancellor of Stellenbosch University has urged people to be cautious about Covid-19 after contracting the virus.
Professor Wim de Villiers said he did not know where he contracted it, but it reminded him how serious a matter Covid-19 was.
He asked that his diary be cleared for self-isolation and rest.
"I am experiencing mild to moderate symptoms, but I don't want to take any chances and will monitor my health closely," said De Villiers in a statement.
He will work online where possible.
"I do not know where I contracted the disease, but I just realised again today that the disease is a serious matter.
"For this reason, I encourage the public and our campus community to wear a mask wherever possible, to maintain a safe distance from each other and to regularly wash your hands with a hand sanitiser.
"If a person presents with symptoms, it is important to be tested and to follow the necessary protocols to limit the spread of Covid-19."
Last week, the Western Cape Department of Health flagged three cases of Covid-19 associated with the university in its "hotspot monitoring".
Dr Keith Cloete, the head of the department, said there was a problem with adhering to mask wearing in that region.
