LUCKNOW: King George's Medical University (KGMU) vice-chancellor Lt Gen (rtd) Prof Bipin Puri, who has been reinfected 11 days after taking the second dose of the vaccine, said that all eligible persons must take the jab. "It saves one from critical illness," he said, adding "I have mild symptoms."

By Wednesday evening 34 resident doctors of KGMU had tested positive over a week. Apart from V-C Prof Puri, KGMU medical superintendent and Covid-19 and communicable disease specialist, Dr D Himanshu, who had also completed his vaccination course, has also tested positive for the infection.

Prof Puri got infected in August last year as well, right after taking the charge.

Tests of several other faculty members were conducted following emergence of influenza-like symptoms. "So far, 34 resident doctors have been found positive. Tests were conducted over the week after Holi," said KGMU spokesperson.

The VC, MS and teachers got exposed to the infection during their day-to-day official activities.

Prof Puri, when contacted, said that he had mild symptoms. Vaccine, he added, prevents critical illness, hence everyone eligible should go for it. However, he emphasised that covid protocol must be followed in letter and spirit even after vaccination.

So far, over a dozen doctors including director SGPGIMS, principal of Era’s Lucknow Medical College and director general health services have tested positive even after completing the vaccination course.
