DMK slams ‘hasty’ appointment of Tanuvas vice-chancellor

DMK general secretary S Durai Murugan
CHENNAI: DMK general secretary S Durai Murugan on Thursday came down heavily on governor Banwarilal Purohit for appointing a new vice-chancellor for Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) in a “hasty” manner. “This hastiness from the governor is unacceptable,” he said.
On Wednesday, a day after assembly election, the governor appointed K N Selvakumar as the VC of the university.
Durai Murugan said assembly election created a scenario for the formation of a new government. The new government would come up with new ideas and programmes. Nearly a month away from counting of votes, it was customary for the authorities to abstain from taking decisions. However, the governor had taken a decision regarding the appointment of the new VC of Tanuvas and issued an order in a hurry, he said.
“We came to know about the appointment of the new VC through newspapers. Why was there such a hurry in appointing the VC? Couldn’t the decision wait a month?” he asked.
He criticised the Centre for appointing former chief secretary Girija Vaidhyanathan as an expert member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) South Zone. The appointment was made on April 5, a day before the election in the state, by the principal bench of the NGT.
