Three opposition legislators, leader of opposition, Digambar Kamat, Vijai Sardesai and Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Wednesday joined hands to contest the Margao Municipal Council election against the BJP under the banner of Margao Civic Alliance.

In the year 2015, the said Margao Civic Alliance was formed. They together won in clear majority.  Babita Prabhudesai was made the chairperson, while  Doris Teixeira was given the vice chairperson’s post.  The alliance broke away post 2017 assembly election after the Goa Forward Party backed the BJP to form the state government.

Addressing a press conference at a hotel in Fatorda, the three legislators said they came together with a common intention to defeat the BJP panel in the Margao municipal election.  “Today, the same model (of joining hands) is being repeated  in this election of  2021.  We came together with a view that the BJP candidates will be defeated,’’ Kamat said.

Sardesai said he appealed to the people through the press conference not to divide the votes, “Together we will send the BJP home. This is the point we wanted to put forth through the media,’’ he said.

Reginaldo Lourenco said the present situation demanded that a collective fight against the BJP is required and therefore he has joined hands with Sardesai and Kamat even though the municipal elections are not fought on party lines.

Meanwhile, the eleven candidates backed by Kamat had filed their nomination papers to contest the election on Wednesday. The candidate backed by   Lourenco from his Housing board areas also filed their nominations.
