Hyderabad: If your professor sends you an email, with some favor, calls him and does cross checks, it’s rarely done. And that’s what got a Jubilee Hills youngster into trouble, with fraudsters posing as his professor cheating him of 3.3 lakh.

According to police, the victim, who was studying engineering at a reputable engineering college in the city, recently received an email with the name of one of his college lecturers as a dispatcher and asked for a gift certificate, each worth of Rs 5,000.

‘If he thinks the sender is his professor, the victim without verification bought about 65 gift vouchers from an e-commerce site worth 3.3 lakh. He sent the coupons to the sender, who used them, “police said, adding that within days the victim had received another email from the same address asking for more gift certificates.

Out of suspicion, he called his professor to check and realized he had been deceived. Based on his complaint, the internet management in Hyderabad discussed a case and investigated.
