An Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker was allegedly killed by political rivals on Tuesday night in Kerala’s Kannur district after voting ended in the state Assembly polls. The incident took place in Kerala’s Kannur district when clashes broke out between workers of the CPI(M) and the IUML in the Kuthuparamba constituency. Kerala saw over 74 percent voter turnout, less the 77 percent in the 2016 election.
The Youth League worker, identified as 21-year-old Mansoor had sustained serious injuries in the clashes and was rushed to a private hospital in Kozhikode, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday, 7 April, news agency PTI reported. The Youth League is the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key ally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
Mansoor’s brother Muhasin has also been admitted to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said two CPI(M) workers have been detained for questioning in connection with the murder. Reports said the IUML has alleged that a group of CPI(M) workers hurled bombs at them before attacking them with sharp weapons. The Congress-led United Democratic Front, of which the IUML has been a long-time constituent, has called for a hartal in Kuthuparamba, reports said.
In another incident of violence, a group of BJP Yuva Morcha activists allegedly attacked a family of Left supporters last night in the state’s northernmost district, Kasaragod, reports said. The family consisting of husband-wife and their son have suffered injuries and admitted to Kannur’s Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.
The police have lodged a complaint against six persons, including local Yuva Morcha leader, Sreejith Parakkalayi.
