Karthi's latest movie, Sulthan, may have released smack dab in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, but that's not stopping it in the least from making its muscle power (pun intended, given the theme of the movie) felt at the box office, at least down South. Of course, the charm of Rashmika Mandanna to go with all the muscle power can't be counted out in having drawn the audience to theatres. Sulthan has collected Rs. 22.05 crore nett over its extended 5-day opening weekend at the box office, and while that may seem less under normal circumstances from a big, family, mass entertainer, it's actually quite good in hindsight, given the uncertain times and threat of the second wave of COVID-19 looming across the country. While the majority of collections have no doubt come from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala have also contributed reasonably well to Sulthan's box office fortunes, proving that not only has the content clicked with the audience across quarters, but also that the COVID-19 situation hasn't affected territories down South as badly as it has in several other regions of the country like Maharashtra and parts of North India. Add to that the generally positive reviews that the Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna starrer has received, and you had many things working in the film's favour from the onset. It remains to be seen how well Sulthan holds over the weekdays and kind of jumps it receives over its second weekend, which would determine its final verdict at the box office, but for now, it's safe to say that the film should at least end up being a clean hit, which is something most producers would give an arm and a leg to achieve during these uncertain times.
