Record 1.07 lakh new cases in a day, total infected about 1.28 crores
According to data received by various states and union territories till late Tuesday night, more than 1.07 lakh new cases have been received during the last 24 hours. This is the largest number of infections in a single day since the first case in the country came to light in January last year. The total infectious population has reached close to 1.28 million. So far, 1.66 lakh people have lost their lives due to this epidemic and more than 1.17 crore patients have been cured. The number of active cases has crossed 8.30 lakhs. On 12 February, the number of active cases had come down to 1,35,926.
Fast-growing cases in 10 states
The infection is spreading rapidly in about 10 states and union territories of the country, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi. On Tuesday, 55,469 new cases were found in Maharashtra, 9,921 in Chhattisgarh, 6,150 in Karnataka, 5,928 in Uttar Pradesh, 5,100 in Delhi, 3,280 in Gujarat, 2,924 in Punjab, and 2,236 in Rajasthan. More than six hundred people have also died during this period, including 297 in Maharashtra, 62 in Punjab, 53 in Chhattisgarh, 39 in Karnataka, 30 in Uttar Pradesh, and 17 in Delhi.
Earlier, in the data released by the Union Health Ministry at eight o'clock on Tuesday morning, 96,982 new cases were reported and 466 people died.
Over 25 million samples tested so far
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 12,11,612 samples were tested across the country on Monday to detect corona infection. Together, a total of 25.02 crore samples have been tested so far.
Protest against strict rules started in Maharashtra
Protests have started in Maharashtra over weekend lockdown and strict rules for the remaining days. In Mumbai as well as in Pune, traders have opposed the state government's directive to close the remaining shops and services till April 30, barring essentials. The Pune-based trade organization said that it would write a letter to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and other officials to protest against the decision. The trade organization says that shops with essential commodities are the most crowded.
