CHANDIGARH: Three days after the Punjab and Haryana high court ordered to conduct senate elections in Panjab University (PU), the university authorities on Tuesday announced the poll dates.
Faculty election will be held on April 26, according to the schedule for the eight constituencies. Total candidates will be 12 with six booths. There will be 754 voters. The counting will be done on the same day.
For principals of technical and professional colleges and staff of technical and professional colleges constituencies, the election will be held on May 3. Both the constituencies will have five candidates and 28 booths each. There will be 52 and 73 voters. The counting will be done on May 5.
Elections for professors of teaching departments will be held on May10. Total candidates will be six with five booths and 279 voters. The counting will be done on May
12. Associate professor/assistant professor of teaching department constituency elections will be held on May10. Total candidates will be seven, with five booths and 439 voters. The counting will be done on May12.
Heads of affiliated arts college constituency elections will be conducted on May 16. Total number of candidates will be 11 with 69 booths and 55 voters. The counting will be done on May 18.
Associate professor/assistant professor of affiliated arts college constituency elections will be conducted on May 16. Total number of candidates will be 15 with 69 booths and 2,423 voters. The counting will be done on May
18. Registered graduates’ constituency elections will be conducted on May 16. The total number of candidates will be 43 with 280 booths and 3,61,879 voters . The counting will be done on May18.
PU spokesperson Renuka B Salwan said “We have started the process of senate elections by announcing the dates.”
On April 4, the Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered PU to conduct senate elections within two months. The senate is the supreme authority of the university. It comprises chancellor, vicechancellor, ex-officio fellows, and ordinary fellows, with the vice-chancellor as the principal executive and academic officer. It is constituted every four years. The term of the latest senate ended in October 2020. Process for holding elections was initiated in August 2020 but abandoned on the grounds of Covid-19.
