Schoenmaker breaks national, African record twice at SA Aquatics championships

Tatjana Schoenmaker was in fine form on the opening day of the SA Aquatics Championships on Wednesday as she twice set a national and African record in the 50m breaststroke. 

After winning her heat in a time of 30.42 earlier in the day, the 2018 Commonwealth champion in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke lowered the national and African record to 30.32 in winning the final.

Lara van Niekerk was second in a time of 31.03 and Caitlin de Lange finished third, stopping the clock in 31.87.

Chad le Close won the 50m butterfly final, finishing in a time of 23.72.

He was pushed hard for the win by Matthew Sates who finished in 24.06 with Pieter Coetze ending in third in 24.14.

The championships will run till Monday.
