New Delhi: The Delhi government on Tuesday imposed a night curfew in the national capital from 10 pm to 5 am till April 30 in the view of rising COVID-19 cases.
The city recorded 3,548 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Monday, while 15 more people succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 11,096, according to the Delhi health department.
The case positivity rate in Delhi has also risen to 5.54% amid a massive surge in cases in the last few weeks.
Traffic movement won’t be stopped completely doing night curfew hours, NDTV reported. Those going for vaccinations during those hours (some vaccination centres are open 24×7) will be allowed to travel with an e-pass.
Those in essential services and retailers who need to travel after hours for ration, grocery stocks, vegetables, milk and medicines will also be allowed with similar passes. So will journalists of the print and electronic media, NDTV said.
Healthcare workers – doctors, nurses and other medical workers – may travel freely with their ID cards.
Passengers going to airports, railway stations and bus stations will be exempt if a valid ticket is produced. Buses, metro, autos, taxis and other modes of public transport will be allowed to ferry only those people who are exempt from the night curfew.
On Friday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that though cases were rising, a lockdown was not being considered as yet. “As per the current situation, we are not considering imposing a lockdown. We are closely monitoring the situation and such a decision will only be taken after due public consultation,” he had said.
Maharashtra and Rajasthan have also recently put in place night curfews as COVID-19 cases continue to spike.
