Assembly election : 36.37 pc polling recorded in UT till noon

Puducherry, Apr 6 (UNI) An estimated 36.37 percent of the total 10,03,840 voters have cast their ballots till 1300 hours in the Union Territory on Tuesday.

The election is to decide the electoral fortune of 324 candidates in the fray, including, former Chief Minister and NR Congress President N Rangaswamy.

As many as 1,558 polling booths (952 main booths and 606 auxiliary booths ) were set up in 635 locations in the UT.

An all women polling booth is also established.

Electronic voting machines(EVMs) and VVPATs are being used in all the polling booths in the Union Territory.

In Uzhavarkarai and Nellithoppe constituencies two ballot units are being used in each polling booth as 16 candidates are contesting in each constituency.

Already,12,693 postal ballots were obtained.

Puducherry police, IRBn Personnel and CAPF personnel were deployed for the election duty.

Brisk polling was reported since morning. However the tempo of voting came down slightly by noon because of the scorching heat.

About 330 polling booths (278 in Puducherry region, 30 in Karaikal region, 8 in Mahe region and 14 in Yanam region) were identified as vulnerable and CAPF personnel were deployed in strength.

The polling was so far peaceful and no incidents of any kind were reported from any region of the UT.
