Verdict

The Canon PowerShot A1000 IS is cheaper than the other Canon cameras from the PowerShot series at Rs 11,995. It’s nothing impressive and the lack of some advanced features means people who want to develop some photography skills are not going to enjoy using it. Users who want a simple point and shoot camera, click the odd photo might find it usable.

Canon PowerShot A1000 IS detailed review

PowerShot Loses Weight And Some Features

The camera is compact with a bulging right side where the batteries lie. The camera uses AA batteries so it is as expected a tad heavier than Lithium-ion powered cameras of the same size. The feel of body is okay but it is a rigid camera that can take a battering. The buttons are simple but firm and don’t have the spongy-soft feel you find in some camera.

The screen is pretty bad — the colours are dull and the viewing angles are very poor, so using it isn’t all that much fun. There is also some delay which gets worse when you zoom into a target.

The interface is clean and simple to use. Most of it is due to lack of some features. The camera doesn’t have a shutter and aperture priority setting. Manual focus is absent too.

The area around the batteries gets warm but not as much as the SX 110 IS that we looked at this month. The flash is mounted on the extreme top-left of the camera. If you have a habit of holding a camera at both ends, then you are bound to cover the flash at least a little bit.

Image quality isn’t grainy as such, but the images aren’t sharp either, even with the ISO option set to as slow as 80. The images have an artificial glow to them as well. When photos are taken against bright light, the light measuring doesn’t work very well and you end up with a photo with extreme contrast levels. Summing up, image quality is average.
