President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday named Justice N V Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India. Ramana will supersede CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde as the top most judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Ramana, who was born on August 27, 1957, will have a tenure as India's chief justice for a year and four months, till August 26, 2022.

Justice Ramana, who will take over as India's 48th Chief Justice hails from Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh and has been in the legal circles since early 1980s. Before becoming part of the apex court, Justice Ramana practiced Civil, Criminal, Constitutional law at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Central Administrative Tribunal, AP state administrative tribunal.

According to his profile on the Supreme Court website, the justice also functioned as Additional Standing Counsel for Central Government and Standing Counsel for Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad. He has also functioned as Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh.

He was raised as the permanent judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000 and was Acting Chief Justice of AP HC from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013. Following his stint with Andhra Pradesh HC, he moved to the Delhi High Court where he served as Chief Justice from September 2, 2013 before being elevated as the judge of Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.

Following his elevation to the top court, he has dealt with matters pertaining to abrogation of Article 370, restriction against grant of bail in a stringent law like The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A constitution bench headed by him also rejected the curative petitions filed by the convicts in the 2012 December gangrape and murder case.
