NSBE Virtual Event on April 5–9 Will Highlight the Need for Social Impact of Black Students and Technical Professionals

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 05, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As their nation grappled with a global pandemic, an economic crisis and the rise of an international movement for social justice spurred by killings of African Americans, the leadership of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) saw the need for change, within their organization and beyond. The leaders of NSBE — an international organization and one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States — saw a mandate for NSBE’s 21,000-plus student and professional members to focus on the development of more Black engineers prepared to advance all elements of the Society’s mission: academic excellence, professional success and, above all, cultural responsibility and positive impact on their communities.

With this mindset, NSBE’s Convention Planning Committee created “The Holistic Engineer,” the 47th Annual Convention of the National Society of Black Engineers (#NSBE47). The virtual event will take place on April 5–9, 2021 and will include dozens of technical and career development workshops; technical and scientific competitions; networking events; panel discussions; inspiring speakers; and more, for attendees of all ages. Featured events of #NSBE47 will also include a gala awards ceremony — the NSBE Golden Torch Awards — and a career fair with nearly 300 exhibitors, including employers recruiting new hires, and institutions of higher education seeking new students.

“I am delighted that we have been able use technology, and our creativity, to continue our Annual Convention and expand its reach in spite of the turmoil of the past 16 months,” said NSBE National Chair Jocelyn Jackson, a second-year doctoral student in engineering education research at the University of Michigan. “This event has been a turning point for thousands of aspiring and practicing Black engineers over the years, myself included, and it still inspires many to have great careers in STEM today. “As NSBE’s first convention after the release of our new strategic plan, Game Change 2025, #NSBE47 will set the tone as we accelerate our progress toward NSBE’s ‘10K Goal,’ ” Jackson added. NSBE’s main 10-year strategic goal is to partner with higher education institutions to graduate 10,000 (10K) new Black engineers annually in the U.S., by 2025.

NSBE 2021 Convention Planning Committee Chair Tiffany Sithiphone declared the creation of #NSBE47 “a tremendous success.”

“The ‘new normal’ created by the pandemic has been difficult for students of all ages as well as for many professionals,” she said. “In planning this convention, our committee has been very mindful of the need to sustain the NSBE family by providing academic, technical and emotional support to help our members meet the challenges of the engineering discipline and to help them plan our collective actions to address societal problems such as racism and inequity. The agenda of #NSBE47 is filled with activities that achieve these ends.”

The NSBE Annual Convention includes activities and events geared toward undergraduates in STEM fields, as well as three “mini-conferences” designed for the Society’s other membership demographics: the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Conference, for elementary school, middle school and high school students; the Graduate School Conference (GSC) for current and prospective graduate students; and the Technical Professionals Conference (TPC) for STEM practitioners. The TPC is coordinated by NSBE Professionals, the 3,600-member organization for technical professional members of NSBE.

The culminating event of the convention, the 24th Annual NSBE Golden Torch Awards ceremony, will honor outstanding achievers in STEM and the community on Friday, April 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Loni Love, comedian, television host, actress, author and former electrical engineer, will host the awards ceremony.

But if you know anything about investing history, you know that many of America’s greatest fortunes were built on real estate. Investing in great companies like Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Uber (NYSE:UBER) in their early days also took a bit more work than buying conventional stocks. But it paid off spectacularly. Early investors made so much money they never have to work again. This is why so many people missed out on the 2017 cryptocurrency boom. Rich people get rich in the first place because they do extra work. With this in mind… my advice is to think like a rich person. Think differently than the masses. And now is the time to start. The gains made during the 2017 cryptocurrency boom were incredible… but what’s coming now is bigger. There’s even more money to be made. We are entering a new phase in the evolution of cryptocurrencies. I call it “Blockchain 2.0.” Bitcoin earned the bulk of gains during the first phase. But this new era belongs to hypergrowth altcoins. The vast majority of Americans don’t understand the true power of altcoins. They don’t understand why a little bit of extra work to invest in them pays off in ways they can’t imagine. Altcoins aren’t really cryptocurrencies in the way most people think of them. They aren’t “fantasy internet money”… they are actually investments in one of the most valuable, most revolutionary technologies ever created. And they will create a multi-trillion-dollar tsunami of wealth for their owners. We’re in the midst of one of the biggest revolutions to occur in finance in centuries. I hope you take advantage.     (Bloomberg) -- The Philippine peso and the Thai baht offer a tale of contrasting fortunes, with one faring better than the other against a strong dollar.The peso dropped 1% against the greenback in the first quarter, outperforming the baht whose 4.2% decline made it emerging Asia’s laggard. The divergence is likely to persist in the coming three months as the Philippines’ trade deficit narrows while Thailand’s tourism industry languishes.As a rising dollar reasserts itself, local factors are helping to determine which regional currencies can better withstand the fallout. Still, a weaker exchange rate may not be an undesirable outcome for Asian policy makers, with the likes of the Bank of Thailand consistently arguing against a strong currency to protect exporters.“The Philippine peso has been driven by expectations on its trade balance,” said Eugenia Fabon Victorino, head of Asia strategy at SEB in Singapore. “The baht is dealing with persistently weak portfolio flows which is exacerbated by the propensity of local corporates to raise outbound investments considering the weak domestic demand in Thailand.”The peso rallied to 47.90 to the dollar in mid-February, the strongest since September 2016. It’s being supported by a steady stream of overseas remittances and expectations for the Philippines’ trade shortfall to shrink as virus-related curbs damp domestic demand and imports.A report due Thursday may confirm this, with economists in a Bloomberg survey forecasting that the deficit narrowed to $2.25 billion in February from $2.42 billion the previous month.All these positives have helped offset the impact of falling real interest rates after Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas kept policy on hold even as inflation quickened. Technicals also favor the Philippine currency, with the dollar-peso currency pair facing resistance at its 200-day moving average, currently around 48.64.In contrast, the outlook for the baht appears less rosy. After bearishly breaching support at around 31.00 to the dollar, the path is clear for Thailand’s currency to fall toward its July low of 31.858.Beyond technicals, the baht lost a pillar of support after Thailand’s long-standing current-account surplus turned into a deficit as tourism collapsed in the face of the pandemic.     South Korea's LG Electronics Inc will wind down its loss-making mobile division after failing to find a buyer, a move that is set to make it the first major smartphone brand to completely withdraw from the market. Its decision to pull out will leave its 10% share in North America, where it is the No. 3 brand, to be gobbled up by Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc with its domestic rival expected to have the edge. "In the United States, LG has targeted mid-priced - if not ultra-low - models and that means Samsung, which has more mid-priced product lines than Apple, will be better able to attract LG users," said Ko Eui-young, an analyst at Hi Investment & Securities.
