Hyderabad: The Division of Municipal Administration and Urban Development intends to set up underground drainage system (UGD) and sewage treatment plants (STPs) in 12 urban local bodies (ULBs) across the state to ensure improvement in sanitation levels.
The ULBs identified for the project include Dharmapuri, Manthani, Kothapalli, Sultanabad, Chennur, Kyathanpally, Luxettipet, Mancheryal, Naspur, Khanapur, Nirmal and Makthal.
In terms of this initiative, the department of municipal administration will invite consultants and businesses to compile detailed project reports.
The task of finalizing the best consultants and project reports has been entrusted to the Institute for Training and Research Protection (EPTRI), an EPTRI official told Telangana Today.
The majority of ULBs do not have a proper drainage system and STPs. It not only affects the sanitation in the ULBs, but it also facilitates the spread of communicable diseases, especially during the monsoon. Furthermore, the state government focuses on sewage management in municipalities and municipal enterprises across the state.
As part of this project, the consultants will study and analyze the issues regarding the implementation and operation and maintenance of existing sewerage facilities implemented in the 12 ULBs.
They will have to study the existing system in the ULBs and examine the different engineering and environmental problems that various institutions face. They will also identify the major producers of wastewater and pollution sources, the sampling and analysis of wastewater and sewage treatment in the ULBs, the official said.
More importantly, the consultants will have to assess the BPL families in the ULB and come up with the costing of sewer connections.
To this end, they must conduct a household community survey to list households with toilets with septic tanks.
The consultants will also have to do the preliminary project surveys and present the various technical selections from Techno. Since all these aspects involve technical studies, the task of finalizing the consultants and preparing DPRs has been assigned to EPTRI, the official said.
Once the ULB has completed the appropriate methodology, the consultants will conduct topographic and land surveys, ground level data and other required surveys for the preparation of the DPRs on sewage collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. Based on the outcome of this initiative, it could be repeated in other ULBs in the future, he said.
