‘Tourism excuse to hide Covid inefficiency’

PANAJI: The state government is trying to hide its inefficiency in handling Covid-19 cases by claiming that stricter norms will affect tourism, said Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on Monday. Questioning the state government’s seriousness, he said that Section 144 does not differentiate between locals and tourists.
Health minister Vishwajit Rane has repeatedly recommended stronger curbs at the border but the calls have been ignored. Ports minister Michael Lobo went to the extent of saying that stronger Covid-19 restrictions will hurt the tourism industry.
“Avoiding stricter SOPs in the name of tourism obscures the larger picture of Goa government’s inefficiency in inhandling Covid from day one,” said Khaunte.
A week earlier, Khaunte had moved a calling attention in the House raising concern about the rising cases. Though the CM said that fresh curbs would be introduced, the government is yet to issue any notification.
