Questions have been raised after two Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officials were reportedly caught on camera hitching a ride on a trailer on the M4 in Gqeberha on Sunday.
According to The Herald, social media users demanded the traffic officers be taken to task for breaking the law.
The video reportedly showed two officials, one in full uniform, holding on to the trailer as it was being slowly driven.
The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality initially
responded to the video on its Facebook page, but the post has since been
deleted.
According to the statement, the municipality said the traffic officers were busy setting up a roadblock at the time of the video. The officers "were riding at a slow speed on an adequately marked modified trailer to put up signs", something which is a standard operating procedure, the statement read.
However, one of the officials was not wearing a reflective jacket, the statement added.
The matter had been addressed by senior traffic officials, according to the statement.
