Genshin Impact Boycott Called for By Fans

Fans of popular action role-playing game Genshin Impact are calling for its boycott, using the #BoycottGenshin hashtag as a rallying point on Twitter. This is due to several issues with the game that have been ignored. According to a tweet that addresses the concerns of fans these range from racism to security lapses in Genshin Impact.

“[M]any of the ‘enemies’ within the game, especially hilichurls, are inspired by indigenous people. this is extremely harmful and demonises indigenous individuals while disrespecting their culture,” claims one such tweet that’s followed up with “[C]haracters are also extremely whitewashed, with only two playable characters, having darker skin and both of them being seen as sly or villainous and having colorist remarks about them by other characters. this is harmful to any player with darker skin and pushes the idea that darker skinned individuals are somehow lesser than lighter skinned peoples.”

Furthermore, other concerns with the game include promotion of paedophilia due to how certain NPCs are portrayed.

In addition to this, are problems regarding account security or lack thereof. Many players have asked for two-factor authentication for new logins, a plea which has fallen on deaf ears despite how easy it is for an account to be hacked.

Finally, it has been alleged that new Genshin Impact content such a new story arc and maps have been delayed to prioritise revenue generation from in-app purchases.

Hopefully developer MiHoYo responds to these issues. As it stands though, the company has opted to stay silent on such matters.
