LG bowing out of the smartphone business has creased the brows of people who own LG smartphones. The South Korean smartphone maker found it hard to establish itself in the world smartphone market whereas its rival from native country, Samsung, is among the top smartphone players in the world. So what’s next if you have bought an LG smartphone and have no clue as to what the future holds regarding software updates, warranties and all? ​All LG phones aren’t out of the market, including some other gadgets

LG may have announced that it’s quit the mobile phone business, but its smartphones that are in stock with the vendors can still be purchased. The company has promised that it will provide these phones with “OS and software upgrades in accordance with relevant regulations” and the after-sales service too.

LG TONE Free and wireless Bluetooth speakers will continue to be developed and sold while existing phones and tablet PCs will be available only till stocks last.

LG says it is “preparing service parts to prevent customer inconvenience”. Users are advised to contact the local customer service centre about availability.

LG mobile phone users can still buy accessories like battery, charger, power cable, headsets, etc. through existing purchase channels though third party accessories may be limited.

​OS upgrades only for selected models

As per the company, “the Android 11 OS upgrade is currently in progress for selected models, and the Android 12 OS upgrade will be rolled out based on the same criteria and process.”

But the upgrade plans may change to depending on Google’s OS distribution schedule. Users are advised to contact the local customer service centre about OS upgrades.

​The fate of LG applications and services

LG says that after closing down the smartphone business operations, some applications and services will be terminated but most will “continue to be available and updated in line with the current policies.” Any change will be announced beforehand. As of now, Qlens and PC Suite / LG Mirror Drive (PC Tool for products released before 2019) will be terminated.
