The Free State-born author published more than 70 Sesotho literature works and has received numerous awards.

Some of his books - such asKabelwamanong, Botsang Lebitla, and Tahleho - have been included in the school curriculum, contributing toward the preservation of the Sesotho language in the schools.

He was recently honoured by the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLAR) in recognition of his passion for the written word, according to the Bloemfontein Courant.

Maphalla holds an honorary doctorate from the University of the Free State, which was awarded in 2007.

He reportedly won his first major literary prize in 1980 in the Sesotho poetry competition which was organised by what is now known as Lesedi FM.
