TN Meeting polls: Just over 65 voter polls recorded

Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded a turnout of 65.11 percent in the one-phase election meeting that took place on Tuesday. Voting in all 234 conventions in 38 districts of the state began at 7 p.m.

According to the Electoral Commission, Karur reported the highest return at 77.21 percent. Other districts where voters cast their ballots in large numbers are Kallakurichi (74.41 percent), Namakkal (74.99 percent), Perambalur (74.51 percent) and Ariyalur (72.99 percent). Chennai reported a 50.56 percent turnout.

In the constituency of Edappadi, where Prime Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is disputed, a voter turnout of 73.00 percent was recorded, while Kolathur, where MK Stalin, head of the DMC, opposed Adhi Rajaram, AIADMK, a configuration of 48.20 percent registered.
Coimbatore (South), from which the actor and leader of Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan, makes his debut in the election, achieves a turnout of 55.44 percent.

Several leaders cast their ballots today, including incumbent Prime Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who urged state voters to do the same after voting at a polling station in Siluvampalayam.

Meanwhile, actors Rajnikanth and Vijay, and actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan also cast their votes in the first and final stages of the state assembly vote.
Tamil actor Vijay rode his bicycle to the polling station at Vels International Pre School, Neelankarai in Chennai.

A total of 3 998 candidates are fighting in a single phase. In order to COVID-19 spread, the number of polling stations was increased to 88,937. The car of AIADMK, MP Ravindranath, was allegedly attacked when he went to the polls in Bodinayakanur constituency, from where his father and Tamil Nadu, deputy principal, O Panneerselvam, contested the election.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a fierce battle between arch-enemies All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and MK Stalin-led DMK. DMK, which has been out of control in the state since 2011, is in a battle against the ruling AIADMK in nearly 130 constituencies.
AIADMK disputes the poll in an alliance before the poll with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). PMK and BJP contested in 23 and 20 constituencies respectively in the Tamil Nadu meeting with 234 members, while the AIADMK made its candidates available for the rest of the seats.

The DMC awarded 25 seats to Congress, six each to CPI, CPI (M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Vaiko’s Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK).
