SC appoints two special judges to hear pending coal scam cases

New Delhi, Apr 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday appointed Arun Bhardwaj and Sanjay Bansal as two special court judges to continue hearing over 40 pending cases in connection with the coal scam cases since 2014.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde passed the order while considering an application filed by registrar general of Delhi High Court to relieve special judge Bharat Parashar currently hearing the coal scam cases.

During the hearing on Monday, the bench revealed that it received a set of five names for the role.

"All the judges are good since they have been sent by the Delhi HC Registrar General,", the CJI said.

The bench, also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, instead of appointing one special judge as replacement of Parashar, nominated the two judges to conduct trials after special public prosecutor RS Cheema's suggestion.

Parashar was appointed at the Supreme Court orders in July 2014 as special judge to exclusively hear coal scam cases.

In August 2014, the top court had quashed the allocation of 214 coal blocks made by the Centre between 1993 and 2010.
