Vladimir Putin has signed a law that would let him seek additional presidential terms in 2024 and 2030, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: Putin was running up against term limits until proposed constitutional changes were approved via referendum last year. Now he could potentially remain in power until 2036, when he'll be 83.

(NASDAQ: AAPL) over exploring ways to skirt the iPhone maker’s new privacy rules that are expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks, the Financial Times reported Friday. What Happened: Snap, the parent of messaging app Snapchat, explored ways to gather data from companies that analyze whether people have responded to ad campaigns, according to the FT report, which cited internal company documents. Snap reportedly hoped to cross-reference the data with its own user database and then track the users, in a technique known as “probabilistic matching.” While Snap acknowledged it had run a probabilistic matching program for several months to test the impact of Apple’s new policies, the company indicated it planned to discontinue the program after Apple introduced the changes, as per the report. The new feature will require apps to obtain permission from users before tracking them, according to Apple. Snap is not the only company to reportedly explore skirting Apple’s new privacy rules so as to continue tracking users without their permission. It was reported last month that Apple warned Chinese app developers and tech companies not to circumvent the new privacy rules. (OTC: TCEHY) and ByteDance are said to be testing or implementing CAID, a system developed by the state-backed China Advertising Association, to identify and track users in the future. Other proposed workarounds reportedly use a process known as fingerprinting. Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) , the second-largest recipient of advertisement revenues after Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), had bitterly criticized Apple’s privacy rule changes for months, saying that the changes could impact targeted advertising on its platform. However, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last month that the rule changes could benefit his company if more businesses decide to sell goods directly through Facebook and Instagram. Price Action: Snap shares closed 4.2% higher on Thursday at $54.49, while Apple shares closed 0.7% higher at $123.00. The prosecutor arrived with a security detail due to death threats against her.Ben-Ari said the main charge against Netanyahu is that he abused his power as prime minister to receive personal and political benefits from media tycoons.In return for favorable regulatory policies, the prosecutor alleged, Netanyahu asked the tycoons not for money but for something of critical importance to him: favorable media coverage, including in the run-up to Israel's 2015 election. Meanwhile, Rivlin was in the midst of consultations over who should receive a mandate to form Israel's next government. The two main contenders are Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid, whose parties finished first and second, respectively.Rivlin told the representatives of the various parties that he doesn’t think either Netanyahu or Lapid will be able to win enough support to form a government and stressed that there's a real risk of a fifth consecutive election.Rivlin also raised for the first time the possibility of denying Netanyahu the mandate due to his corruption trial. In a meeting with representatives of Netanyahu’s Likud party, Rivlin said he might have to consider “morals and values” before offering the mandate, but stressed that he didn't know whether such a determination should be made by him, the Supreme Court or the Knesset.The state of play: The first witness who took the stand today was Ilan Yeshua, the former CEO of Walla News, one of Israel’s largest news websites. Yeshua is the key witness in “Case 4000,” in which Netanyahu was indicted for bribery.According to the indictment, Netanyahu gave regulatory benefits worth more than $300 million to Shaul Elovitch — who owned Walla News as well as a major telecom firm — in return for Elovitch tilting the site's coverage in Netanyahu’s favor and using it to attack his political opponents.Yeshua gave the police a mountain of evidence, including audio recordings, text messages and WhatsApp exchanges that show how Elovitch allegedly ordered him to shape the coverage every time his telecom company needed regulatory approvals from Netanyahu.In his testimony today, Yeshua said he felt like he was in North Korea and used to call Netanyahu and his wife “Kim and Ri” — the names of the North Korean dictator and his wife. He said that Netanyahu intervened in Walla's coverage more in one week than all other Israeli politicians put together had in a decade.“They [Elovitch and his wife] told me they don’t care about journalism but about Netanyahu signing off on their business interests. I was told that if Sara Netanyahu gets mad, Benjamin Netanyahu will get mad and won’t sign," he said.What’s next: Yeshua’s testimony is expected to continue for at least two or three more sessions. He is only the first of more than 300 witnesses who are expected to testify in the trial, which will convene three days a week.Netanyahu left the court before Yeshua started testifying. It's unclear how often he'll attend the trial in person.The latest: After the court session ended, Netanyahu attacked the prosecutor in a statement, claiming the charges were fabricated and he was the victim of a politically motivated "witch hunt" and "an attempted coup to topple a right-wing Prime Minister." What's next: Rivlin is expected to hand the mandate to Netanyahu or Lapid by Wednesday, and he could even announce his decision on Tuesday after the new Knesset is sworn in.     Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu appeared in court Monday to hear a third set of charges in a sprawling corruption investigation involving alleged bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. A few miles from the Jerusalem courtroom, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin was consulting with Netanyahu's Likud and other political parties Monday to determine which he should ask to try and form a governing coalition after an inconclusive fourth election in two years. The vote in the March 23 election resulted in 13 parties dividing the 120 seats of the Knesset, or parliament, and neither Netanyahu's right-wing bloc or the ideologically diverse anti-Netanyahu coalition has the 61 votes to claim a governing majority. That means Netanyahu's fate "could come down to Naftali Bennett, a right-wing former ally with whom he has strained ties, and Mansour Abbas, the leader of a small Arab Islamist party who also has yet to commit to either the pro- or anti-Netanyahu blocs," The Associated Press reports. If no leader can form a government, there will be a fifth election. Netanyahu has refused to step down as he faces trial on criminal charges, and Israeli law doesn't require him to. Monday's hearing, involving allegations dubbed Case 4000, centered on testimony from the former chief editor of a news site, Walla, owned by Israeli telecom giant Bezeq. The editor, Ilan Yeshua, will testify that Bezeq chief executive Shaul Elovitch pressured him hard and continuously to change articles to meet the demands of Netanyahu and his family. Netanyahu, in return for the favorable coverage, backed legislation worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Bezeq's owner, prosecutors allege. I never served in any role in the Israeli intelligence services," Shaposhnik told me. "I don’t have any knowledge of the events that took place in Jordan or of the people involved. I am a close personal friend of Prince Hamzah."He added that he had wanted to help the prince’s wife and their kids at this difficult time.Between the lines: Shaposhnik, 41, was a political operative in the centrist Kadima party in Israel 15 years ago. He served as an adviser to then Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.Later he went to the private sector and worked for U.S. businessman Erik Prince's security company. After several years he established his own company, RS Logistical Solutions, which provided services to the U.S. State Department and other governments around the world.Shaposhnik’s company also provided logistical services to Prince’s company as it was training Iraqi soldiers in Jordan. This is when he met Prince Hamzah through a mutual friend. The pair and their families became close friends.On Saturday morning, Prince Hamzah sent Shaposhnik a text message telling him he had been placed on house arrest. A source familiar with the matter told me Shaposhnik sent Prince Hamzah’s wife a text message right away and proposed to send a jet to pick up her and their children until the situation clears out. Since then, Shaposhnik has had no contact with Prince Hamzah and his family, who are on house arrest and with no ability to communicate with the outside world, the source said. Like this article?
