Florida Man Steals Ambulance, Gets It Stuck in Mud a Few Miles Away
A Florida man was arrested on Sunday after he stole an ambulance but got it stuck in mud a few miles away.
According to a press release from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office in Florida, on Sunday, authorities responded to a call of a stolen ambulance near the area of Port Court in Spring Hill.
The ambulance is owned by the Hernando County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, according to the release. At around 12:27 p.m. local time, the ambulance was parked in the ambulance bay of the Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Florida, when it was taken.
The ambulance was left unsupervised while parked in the ambulance bay as the operating crew was in the process of transporting a patient from the ambulance to inside the hospital.
The suspect who allegedly stole the ambulance was identified by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office as 29-year-old Trey Cornwell.
According to the release, after Cornwell allegedly stole the ambulance from the Oak Hill Hospital's ambulance bay, he drove it a few miles away to the "Kass Circle area off of Port Court."
As Cornwell continued to drive the stolen ambulance, he eventually approached a "a nearby body of water off of Port Court," where the ambulance got stuck in mud and sand, according to the release. In the release, which was posted to Facebook, police also included several pictures of the ambulance where it can be seen stuck in the mud and sand.

After getting the stolen ambulance stuck in the sand and mud, the release states that witnesses told authorities that they saw Cornwell get out of the vehicle and flee toward a nearby shopping center.
According to Google Maps, the area where Cornwell left the ambulance stuck in mud and sand, is roughly nine miles away from the Oak Hill Hospital.
After fleeing the scene, authorities continued their search for Cornwell and he was eventually found near the Hernando County Sheriff's Office substation located at 1231 Kass Circle. The substation is just a few blocks away from where Cornwell had allegedly left the stolen ambulance stuck in mud and sand, according to Google Maps.
After being arrested by authorities with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, Cornwell was charged with grand theft auto.
Cornwell was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center, according to the release. He is being held in the detention center "in lieu of a $10,000 bond." Cornwell's motive for the alleged incident was unclear.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office directed Newsweek to the press release after reaching out for comment.
Newsweek reached out to the Hernando County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
