Second Covid golf much more intense in Telangana

Hyderabad: The second wave of Covid infections appear to be much more intense than last year when the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was fairly stable across Telangana. In April, the state’s public and private healthcare machinery faced a disease burden of Covid infections already seen in July last year.

The trend may be an indication that the community and healthcare infrastructure in Telangana may be under stress for a long time due to new Covid infections. Due to the surge in new infections during the ongoing second wave, especially in areas under GHMC and other urban centers in Telangana, which has reportedly been done, private hospitals have already started struggling to allocate beds for Covid positive patients who require inpatients.

The first Covid infection in Telangana was reported on 2 March 2020 and for the next few months, i.e. between March and May, the daily number of new infections remained below the 100 mark.

For the first time on 3 June 2020, Telangana saw more than 100 cases with the Department of Public Health (DPH) reporting 129 new reports. Covid infections and nine deaths in one day. On the same day, the daily new Covid infections in Hyderabad were 108, while only 21 positive cases were reported in districts.

One year later, the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus (or a new modified strain) is very contrasting, as new infections are reported evenly from across the state. While Hyderabad still has a large disease burden, it is the tiger II and tiger III cities that are seeing a gradual increase in new infections.

The suburbs of Hyderabad, including Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri and other smaller cities like Nizamabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nirmal and Sangareddy, are now a challenge for the inclusion strategies of public health officials. Quite consistently, these smaller cities did between 50 and 100 new reports Covid daily infections during the past two weeks in the state.

On Saturday, there are a total of 1,321 new Covid infections were reported in the state, while a similar situation occurred on 2 July 2020 when the daily new infections were 1,213, with 998 cases from Hyderabad, 48 from Ranga Reddy and 54 from Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. The statistics clearly indicate that the public and private healthcare machinery in Telangana is experiencing the same wave of infections by April as in July.
