Donating the sperm is not a small decision to take. If a man is considering donating the sperm and wants to know more about it then this is just the right information for him. By donating the semen, a man becomes the biological father of the kid and it is completely the decision of the man whether he wants to meet the child in the future or not. - Age of the donor: The person who wants to donate their sperms should have attained the age between 18 and 39 years. This age limit is preferred by most of the sperm banks. Some sperm donation centers in Chandigarh sometimes set the upper age limit that is 34 years. And it could be different from center to center. But usually lies in between 18 to 39 years.
- Preliminary evaluation: A person needs to submit an application form provided by the sperm bank. In this form, you need to fill in all the details regarding your and your family’s medical as well as genetic history. You also need to submit your self-declaration form, a specimen, and a release document to the official. After submitting all these documents, the application is analyzed while interviewing the applicant. The applicant should be ready with the documents.
- Physical examination: After clearing the interview, the applicant is asked to have a test in which it is checked whether the applicant is having any infectious disease or not by testing his blood and urine samples. If there is no issue, then you can regularly donate your sperms and you will have to take the same test at an interval of six months. If there is any alteration in your health status, then you will have to report it to the particular doctor.
- Testing of semen: If a person is free from HIV or any other disease, then he is asked to submit two or more samples of sperm for further analysis. The sample is evaluated based on movement, pH value, white blood cells, viability, quantity, abnormality, etc. Then the sample of semen is frozen and for further thaw analysis, it is thawed. If the sample doesn’t go through the standardized post-thaw value, that is, 20 million total motile cells/ml, then the particular sample is rejected.
- Medical as well as Genetic testing: The information provided by the applicant in the application about their medical and genetic condition, is duly tested by the sperm bank. Applicant as well as his family’s blood samples are taken and then tested to find out whether he or his family is having any medical or genetic disorder. If they have any disorder, then his application for donating sperm is rejected for further screening.
- Evaluation of psychological condition: The applicant is also asked if he is comfortable enough to share his details with his biological baby in the future. There is the possibility that you already knew the recipient, so you may be asked to tell about both of your relationships. Also, if he is already married then it might be a case that his partner might be feeling awkward, in this scenario psychological counseling is suggested for the couple.
- Personal and sexual information: One is also asked to share his sexual as well as personal information, such as, if he is a drunkard or drug addict, to know if he is prone to any infectious disease. The applicant is further asked to share his educational background, personal interest, and hobbies. Sometimes, there may be the case that they ask you to share the pictures as well as video capturing you and your family with audio recordings.
