Mumbai has recorded 11,000 fresh COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, its highest ever single-day spike since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Mumbai has recorded over 11,000 fresh COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, its highest ever single-day spike since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The financial capital reported 11,163 COVID-19 infections in a span of 24 hours taking Mumbai’s caseload to 4,52,445. Meanwhile, 25 deaths reported in the same time period took the city’s toll to 11,776.
A total of 5,263 patients were discharged from hospitals, which took the recovery count to 3,71,628. As many as 43,597 tests were conducted across the city on Sunday, which took its overall test count to 42,49,175, the BMC said.
The COVID-19 recovery rate of Mumbai district is 82 per cent, while the case growth rate from March 28 to April 3 was 1.61 percent. The case doubling rate is 42 days, the statement said.
The record jump in single-day tally comes on a day the Maharashtra government announced a series of fresh restrictions while keeping from imposing a complete lockdown in the state which continues to the biggest contributor in terms of COVID-19 cases reported across the country.
The Uddhav Thackeray government announced a weekend lockdown in the state from 8 pm on Friday to 7 am on Monday. Apart from the weekend lockdown, strict restrictions will be in force from Monday 8 pm onwards, Minority Affairs Minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik told reporters after the cabinet meeting.
“Apart from the weekend lockdown, strict restrictions will be in force from 8 pm tomorrow, under which shopping malls, bars, restaurants,small shops will be open only for take-aways and parcels. Government offices will be allowed to function only at 50 per cent of their capacity,” he said.
Industries and production sector, vegetable markets will function with Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) and construction sites will operate if there is accommodation facility for workers, he added.
Theatres, drama theatres will be shut, while film and television shootings will continue if there is no crowding. Parks and playgrounds will also be closed, he said.
Religious places will have to follow the SoPs, Malik said, adding that that public transport system will remain functional.
