GHAZIABAD: Four teenagers out for a joyride met with an accident on Thursday evening when their speeding car turned turtle in Indirapuram while trying to avert a collision with a cyclist, resulting in the death of one. The other three teens, all cousins, sustained injuries in the accident, police said.
The deceased was identified as 17-year-old Kunal Pal, a resident of Arthala. Around 7pm on Thursday, Kartik (17), one of the injured boys, took the keys of the car from his father Munesh Pal on the pretext of parking the vehicle, but went for a ride, along with his three cousins — Kunal, Robbin (17) and Kisan (16). When they reached the Kanavni area, Kartik lost control of the speeding car while trying to avert hitting a cyclist.
The car, which was travelling at a high speed, landed upside down on the ground with a thud, according to eye-witnesses. They also alleged that the cops took almost 15 minutes to reach the spot even though the police station is not more than 500 metres away. The accident also led to a massive traffic jam on the busy stretch. Later, police removed the ill-fated car using a hydraulic crane.
However, Sanjeev Sharma, SHO of Indirapuram police station, said a police team reached the spot immediately after being informed by passersby about the accident. “The cops rushed the four injured boys to a nearby hospital for treatment. Kunal died during the treatment, while the other three boys were released from the hospital after first aid,” he said.
“The car was being driven by Kartik, while Kunal had been seated adjacent to him. Prima facie, it seems the driver could not control the car when the cyclist suddenly came in the middle of the road,” the SHO said.
However, police have not yet lodged an FIR in the case. “We are yet to receive a complaint from the family members of the deceased,” Sharma added.
