'Test, track, treat' strategy, appropriate behaviour and vaccination will help curb Covid spread: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reviewed the COVID-19 situation and vaccination exercise in the country amid an "alarming rate of growth" in infections and deaths, with 10 states contributing to more than 91 percent of them.

Modi said the five-fold strategy of testing, tracing, treatment, COVID-appropriate behaviour and vaccination if implemented with utmost seriousness and commitment would be effective in curbing the pandemic's spread, according to an official statement.

The reasons for the sharp rise in cases could be mainly attributed to the severe decline in compliance of COVID-appropriate behaviour, especially in the use of masks and social distancing, pandemic fatigue and lack of effective implementation of containment measures at the field level, it said.

"A detailed presentation was made which highlighted that there is an alarming rate of growth of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the country with 10 states contributing to more than 91 percent of cases and deaths due to COVID," it said.

It was noted in the meeting that vaccine manufacturers are ramping up their production capacity and are also in discussion with other domestic and offshore companies to augment the same. (PTI)

The Centre on Saturday directed the states and Union Territories that no fresh registrations of healthcare and frontline workers will be allowed as some ineligible beneficiaries in this category were getting their names enlisted in violation of the rules. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, in a letter, said registration of persons aged 45 years and above will continue to be permitted on Co-WIN portal and asked the states and UTs to ensure universal vaccination of already registered healthcare workers and frontline workers at the earliest.

Of the 513 deaths reported on Saturday, 277 of them are from Maharashtra, which included 78 previously unaccounted deaths. Punjab reported 49 deaths. Chhattisgarh recorded its highest-ever daily case count of 5,818. Active cases are nearing seven lakh now.

A day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray warned of a possible lockdown in the state, he held separate meetings with various stakeholders on Saturday to build consensus on restrictions that he said had to be imposed to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19. Thackeray held consultations with senior journalists, gym and multiplex owners as well as people from the Marathi drama and film industry.

Odisha’s Covid-19 tally mounted to 3,42,224 on Saturday as 452 more people tested positive for the infection. While Nuapada reported 71 new cases, Kalahandi registered 29 fresh infections and Bargarh 19.
