Women need good representation in the cinema, says Bhumi Pednekar

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar spoke on Thursday about the importance and need for a good representation of women in cinema and how through her work she has always strived to bring light to the real women of our society.

The ace actor, who has repeatedly shown that she tends to choose social entertainers through her versatile performances in films such as Toilet – I Prem Katha, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Bala, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, among others, talked about why women need good representation in cinema.

She said: ‘I often choose films with a strong social message, but I also think about choosing projects that will do commercially well. This is important because such films have to reach out to many people to drive the message and intention home. I try to go to the cinema, which balances both. ‘

Bhumi talked about her film Toilet – I Prem Katha, and added: ‘When you think of Toilet, it’s one of my most commercial, socially relevant films. But the kind of reach the film had or what kind of impact the film had, I was amazed. After the film was released, there were campaigns where fathers and mothers came to the fore and said, ‘no toilet, no bride’.

It was honestly fantastic. She went on to talk about her other films and said: ‘Ayushmann and I made a film together – Shubh Mangal Saavdhan – that talks about human sexuality and that is something that is not talked about. I did Lust Stories that talk about the gender gap, class divide, and female sexuality, something that is not talked about at all. Women are shown as people who have no desires – no ambition, no sexual desires, and that’s something I want to change again. ”
