MUMBAI: The BMC has collected Rs 5,135 crore in property tax for FY 2020-21, the highest in 10 years. The mop-up was 98% of its target of Rs 5,200 crore for the year.
Property tax is the biggest source of revenue for the civic body, and officials said the recovery of taxes
was a major challenge in the wake of the pandemic. The previous highest collection was Rs 5,132 crore in 2017-18.
With Rs 540.3 crore, K East ward was the top contributor. The ward, mainly comprising Andheri (east), Jogeshwari and Vile Parle, is also the largest ward geographically.
City’s western suburbs top in property tax
Following K East ward was K West (Andheri west) from where the BMC collected Rs 454.5 crore in property tax. H East (Bandra east) saw recoveries of Rs 411.3 crore.
Wards in the western suburbs contributed Rs 2,545.9 crore, while Rs 1,509.5 crore was collected from the city area wards and Rs 1,076 crore from the eastern suburbs.
On the other hand, despite lockdown, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has collected its highest property tax so far in this financial year — Rs 427 crore — of which a record Rs 10.78 crore was collected in a single day on March 31.
