Last year, Apple made a bold announcement that it would turn carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030, 20 years ahead of the target set by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).
In that order, the company later in the year in September reduced 70-percent of the contents including the Earpods and charging adaptors in the product’s retail package. This did not just the apply to latest iPhone 12 series, but also all old iPhone, Watch and iPad variants being sold from October 2020.
Apparently, this would help the company cut down on the environmental impact due to mining minerals for making iPhones and components and thus reduce 2 million metric tons of carbon annually.
Now, the company has announced that around 110 Apple’s supplier companies around the world including some India-based partners are moving to 100 per cent renewable energy for their Apple production, with nearly 8 gigawatts of planned clean energy set to come online.
The company says it can avoid over 15 million metric tons of CO2e annually — the equivalent of taking more than 3.4 million cars off the road each year, and a major energy storage project in California will pilot new solutions for renewable infrastructure.
“We are firmly committed to helping our suppliers become carbon neutral by 2030 and are thrilled that companies who’ve joined us span industries and countries around the world, including Germany, China, the US, India, and France,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.
