NY attack renews Asian American volunteers' effort

Following an attack on an older Asian American woman in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens in February, a 29-year-old Chinese American woman started what she calls the Main Street Patrol. (April 1)

TERESA TING: Patrolling right now is the most efficient and direct way that we can be proactive to the community as a response to the attacks. Obviously, there's so much that needs to be done. There needs to be educational courses on, you know, Asian culture, Asian history, Black history, Black solidarity. I think all of those things are-- need to be incorporated and integrated. But first and foremost, this is what we can do, you know, in the moment, in the meantime.

My motivation was basically to raise awareness on xenophobia and people who still don't think this is real, because this is very much real. It's current. It can happen maybe to not your minority group at this moment, but I think racism is just racism. And it should not be tolerated.

I basically just want to bring compassion back to the community. And I think that's something that's been lost throughout the decades. And just coming together and helping each other is the bigger message. I think fending for each other, standing up, and bringing humanity back is what I really want.

The Russian embassy in Rome confirmed the events and released a short statement, saying it was “verifying” details, and hoped the inconvenient series of events would not compromise relations between the two nations. “For now, we consider it inappropriate to comment on what happened,” the statement said. “In any event, we hope that what happened is not reflected on the bilateral relationship between Russia and Italy.”Russian president Vladimir Putin’s obsession with the destruction of NATO, which was to a large extent backed by former President Donald Trump, is not yet confirmed as the motive behind the sale of these documents. There are six NATO bases in Italy, all joint operations with the U.S. and Italian military. It is yet unknown which of those bases the alleged Italian spy worked on.NATO officials did not immediately return requests for information, but this is the second event involving classified NATO documents in recent weeks. In mid March, an Estonian researcher with NATO clearance was arrested for spying for China.     Myanmar's wireless broadband internet services were shut down on Friday by order of the military, a local provider said, as protesters continued to defy the threat of lethal violence to oppose the junta's takeover. A directive from the Ministry of Transport and Communications on Thursday instructed that "all wireless broadband data services be temporarily suspended until further notice,” according to a statement posted online by local provider Ooredoo. Also Friday, the New York-based Human Rights Watch issued a report saying that Myanmar's military has forcibly disappeared hundreds of people, including politicians, election officials, journalists, activists and protesters and refused to confirm their location or allow access to lawyers or family members in violation of international law.

    NEW YORK (Reuters) -A New York man previously convicted of murdering his mother has been arrested and charged with assaulting a 65-year-old Asian woman in a hate crime, an attack captured on a video that went viral amid a rise in anti-Asian incidents in the United States. Police identified Brandon Elliot, 38, as the man seen in the video kicking the woman to the ground and then kicking her several more times on Monday near Times Square in midtown Manhattan. Elliot was due to be arraigned later on Wednesday on two charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime and one count of first-degree attempted assault as a hate crime, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said at a news briefing.
