Zirakpur, March 31

Sanitation employees of the local Municipal Council staged a dharna outside its office over their long-pending demands today.

In their address, MC Workers’ Union president Ravinderpal Singh and Sweepers’ Union president Pradeep Kumar said the Punjab Government was apprised of their demands through the council officials. Instead of resolving the demands, the government was deliberately delaying it. Pradeep Kumar said the previous SAD-BJP government and the Congress government had been ignoring their demands.

The workers’ main demands include doing away with the contractor system and regularising the jobs of employees hired on ad hoc basis. The leaders said if the demands were not met soon, they would intensify their protest. — TNS
