Two women have been killed after a fire ripped though their informal dwelling in Highgate near Silversands.

The City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue services said they were called out to the scene in Syrus Gate Street at 19:50 on Wednesday night.

Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said four children - two girls and two boys - had managed to escape the blaze.

"Fire crews from Kuilsriver, Belhar and Strand were immediately dispatched to the incident and, when firefighters arrived on scene, they found the entire informal structure well alight and the fire was busy spreading to neighbouring property."

Carelse said the fire was extinguished shortly before 21:00 and that the bodies of the two women were found amongst the debris.

He added that police wre now investigating on the scene.

Western Cape Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said the two people who had died were aged 34 and 38.

She said a death inquest case had been opened for further investigation.
