Puducherry reports highest ever Covid-19 spike during 2nd wave

PUDUCHERRY: The Union territory of Puducherry on Thursday reported the highest ever spike in Covid-19 cases during the second wave.
The territory reported 260 fresh cases even as 43 patients recovered in the last 24 hours as of 10am on Thursday taking the total number of active cases to 1,290. Of the 1,290 cases, 973 are under home isolation and treatment.
Puducherry headquarters has the maximum fresh cases with 190 followed by Karaikal (54) and Mahe (16). Puducherry headquarters has the maximum active cases with 868 followed by Karaikal (364), Mahe (45) and Yanam (13).
A 72-year-old man with comorbidities from Puducherry died taking the death toll to 683. Puducherry headquarters has the maximum fatalities with 617, Karaikal (302), Mahe (43) and Yanam (11).
The fatality rate of the infection stood at 1.6%. The territory has so far reported 41,728 cases of which 39,755 patients recovered registering a recovery rate of 95.2%.
Healthcare authorities have so far sent 6.73 lakh swab samples of which 6.22 lakh samples returned negative. The positivity rate of the samples (2,355) tested on Wednesday stood at 11%.
The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services administered the Covid-19 vaccine to 868 healthcare workers, 1,394 frontline workers and 1,431 others on Wednesday. The directorate has so far administered the vaccine to 72,155 people including healthcare and frontline workers.
