The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said commercial text messages are finally getting delivered smoothly, welcoming the support of the RBI, Sebi, UIDAI, the health ministry, the department of financial service and the GSTN amongst others for backing the regulator in ensuring strict compliance of the new norms for sending SMS traffic.

“Reports from telecom service providers (TSPs) indicate that no major issues have come to the notice leaving a few cases, and messages, which are in accordance to the regulations, are getting delivered successfully,” Trai said in an official statement Thursday.

The sector regulator, though, has asked telcos to identify the cause of any rejections of commercial text messages from principal entities (PEs), telemarketers and aggregators.

Trai had recently ruled out any further relaxation for business entities that had failed to comply with the new norms on sending commercial text messages after being given an additional 23 days and a senior official had said errant parties should suffer the consequences and lose business.

Telcos, in fact, had been directed by the regulator to implement the SMS regulation with strictly from April 1, wherein, non-compliant message traffic would be blocked.

Till recently, nearly 48% of overall commercial SMS traffic had failed to pass the scrub test by a blockchain-based solution. Scrubbing is the process that matches SMS content with a pre-registered template submitted by every principal entity that sends commercial text messages to its customers. If the content doesn’t match the template, the telcos block the message.
