Tamil Nadu reported 2,817 fresh
Covid-19 cases on Thursday, which pushed the case tally to 8.89 lakh. The death of 19 patients took the cumulative toll tally to 12,738. There were 17,043 people undergoing treatment for Covid-19.
Until Thursday afternoon, 85,331 people underwent
RT-PCR tests.
While Chennai, the worst affected district, had 1,083 new cases, it’s neighbours Chengalpet (258), Tiruvallur (158) and Kancheepuram (115) together added 531 cases. The region reported 13 deaths.
Cuddalore, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli -- reported one death each.
After Chennai, the highest number of cases were reported from Coimbatore. The district reported 280 deaths.
In the central region, Thanjavur remained a hotspot with 113 fresh cases.
Two people who came from West Bengal and one person each from Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh tested positive for the viral infection.
The last time Tamil Nadu had active cases above 17,000 was on November 14, 2020. Active cases were the highest in three districts – Chennai (6,695), Chengalpet (1,817) and Coimbatore (1,717). With seven cases Perambalur had the lowest number of active cases followed by 24 in Kallakurichi.
One of the deaths reported on Thursday was that of a woman from Ramanathapuram, who died on August 13, 2020. Public health officials said she was admitted to Ramanathapuram Government Headquarter Hospital on July 26 and was discharged against medical advice four days later. She was then admitted to a private hospital, from where she was discharged on August 5, but she died at her residence. Her death was added into the registry after reconciliation.
