KOLKATA: Kolkata Police are banking on community policing, seeking help from vigilant citizens to ensure everyone wears a mask.
A new one-minute video, released on behalf of KP, has urged citizens to point to anyone not wearing a mask and ask violators in public to wear it. The police are reaching out to schools, colleges and cultural associations to involve them in this Mask-Up Kolkata drive.
“People are still not wearing masks most of the time citing the heat. However, with a surge in numbers, we have decided to involve people. The video shows a person wearing a mask and asking a driver passing by him to wear one. This is the community responsibility that we are trying to inculcate,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
Police sources said they plan to send the messages through social media and hold meetings with the stakeholders.
The police stricture came after at least 30% of those fined were found to be wearing the mask merely as an accessory without realizing its importance. The other 70% are not wearing the mask at all, a complete reversal from the ground situation during Durja puja, claimed cops.
