From June 2021, Malta is preparing to start welcoming tourists back, Clayton Bartolo, the Tourism Minister said on Tuesday, as he disclosed the new plan of the island to start tourism again that was badly dented by the pandemic.

Bartolo explained at a press conference that the government through an aid package will add 20 million euros that’s specifically designed to kick-start the sector damaged by the pandemic. The tourism industry in 2019 injected 2.2 billion euros into the economy of the country.

Bartolo said that talks were in progress with the European Commission as it was anticipating allowing green passports for the ones who are vaccinated by now and would allow them to travel with zero constraints.

He explained that tourists are first expected to come to Malta from the countries in Europe which will have a higher rate of vaccinations by summer as well as from the United Kingdom, which has been the biggest tourism market for Malta all times.

At present, Malta is on a semi-lockdown phase which started from March 10th with schools, restaurants, bars, cafeterias and non-essential services remaining closed as part of a series of measures executed to restrain the COVID spread and which will remain in place until April 11th.

At present, authorities of health are working on a pandemic exit plan as infection cases have dropped however no details have been made public yet. On Tuesday, health authorities have declared 55 new cases, the lowest this year and the current active cases have dropped to less than 900.
