Water police killed when the taxi hit him during the investigation; family comes forward for organ donation

Hyderabad: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Cyberabad police who was injured when a car bumped into him while driving against drunk driving on March 26, died on Wednesday, police said.

Mahipal Reddy, an ASI from the KPHB police station under Cyberabad Police Commissariat, was pronounced dead at a hospital early Wednesday.

The police officer came forward to donate his organs for ‘Maro Janma’, an initiative of Cyberabad for organ donation.

VC Sajjanar, Cyberabad Police Commissioner, visited the ASI home with senior police officers and comforted his family members.

Mahipal Reddy was injured when a speeding taxi bumped into him on Saturday night when he visited a checkpoint where a housekeeper and a woman were injured after a drunk four-wheel drive driver hit them while trying to escape the check.

When the officer inspected the Hyundai Creta car, the driver of which hit the police barrier while trying to escape, a fast cabin slammed into him.

Mahipal Reddy suffered head injuries and a fracture to his left leg. He was admitted to a hospital, where he died Wednesday.

Police arrested the driver of the car, Aslam, who was not under the influence of alcohol but apparently was driving at a high speed.

Srujan, who was driving with Hyundai Creta, was arrested for drunk driving.

The incident took place near the Kolan Raghava Reddy Function Hall in Nizampet below the boundaries of the KPHB police station. After noticing the checkpoint, Srujan tried to turn the vehicle around to escape and hit a tree. He then drove forward through the barriers to escape and in the process struck a house guard and a woman standing there. Both sustained minor injuries.

Mahipal Reddy came there to inquire about the incident when a taxi was driving at high speed.

In a similar incident at KPHB Colony on 23 February, a sub-inspector was injured while intercepting a drunken motorcycle. Instead of stopping the bike, the cyclist tried to escape by riding in the wrong direction. SI K. Rajeshwar was injured in the incident.

Dozens of cases of drunk driving are registered every day in and around the city under the auspices of three police commissioners – Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.

A total of 131 people arrested within a week by the Cyberabad police for drunk driving were jailed for one period of one to 25 days.
