Search continues for suspect in New York City attack on 65-year-old Asian woman

Authorities remain on the lookout for an individual suspected of attacking a 65-year-old Asian woman in New York City on Monday, including shoving her to the ground, kicking her and stomping on her face in New York City on Monday.

The big picture: The lone offender is also suspected of hurling anti-Asian slurs at the victim, who was reportedly on her way to church. ABC 7 writes that the assailant fled the scene and pulled a knife once nearby workers tried to confront him.

The WHO - and Dr Tedros himself - have been criticised for being too close to China, so this veiled rebuke will be welcomed by some. The 123-page report, outlining the key findings from a highly-anticipated research trip to Wuhan, was published on Tuesday. It concluded that, while possible, it is “extremely unlikely” that Sars-Cov-2 escaped from a lab. The city where the virus first emerged is home to several high security labs - including China's foremost zoonotic disease research centre, the Wuhan Institute of Virology - and rumours the virus escaped from here have circulated since the start of the pandemic.

    The World Health Organization’s report on the origins of the coronavirus contradicts U.S. intelligence reports concerning the safety of a laboratory in Wuhan, China, where the pandemic began. The WHO report released on Tuesday dismissed the hypothesis that the coronavirus leaked from a lab in Wuhan as “extremely unlikely.” Investigators claimed that the three laboratories in the city where coronaviruses were studied “all had high quality biosafety level (BSL3 or 4) facilities that were well-managed,” along with staff monitoring systems that showed “no reporting of COVID-19 compatible respiratory illnesses during the weeks/months prior to December 2019.” However, the report contradicts U.S. diplomats who expressed concerns about safety levels at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, whose researchers studied bat coronaviruses prior to the pandemic. American diplomats visited the WIV in 2018 and reported their concerns to Washington, D.C., in cables reported by the Washington Post. “During interactions with scientists at the WIV laboratory, [U.S. officials] noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory,” one cable read. As to the report’s claim that no lab workers had been infected with COVID-19, the State Department announced in January that researchers at the lab reported flu-like symptoms in the fall of 2020, weeks before COVID-19 was identified. WIV researchers have performed “gain-of-function” research on bat coronaviruses, essentially changing features of the pathogen to make it more contagious. Such research has been conducted in laboratories throughout the world, and while some scientists view it as dangerous because of the risk of creating more deadly pathogens, others view the research as necessary in order to gain knowledge of potentially devastating diseases. Following the onset of the pandemic, U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly concluded that the coronavirus first leaked from a lab. Various current and former U.S. officials are divided on whether the coronavirus escaped from a lab or whether it jumped from animals to humans in nature. Former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention head Robert Redfield said on Friday that he believes the coronavirus leaked from a lab. Meanwhile, former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who also sits on the board of Pfizer, has argued that a lab leak scenario is “plausible” but not the most likely theory.

That means some 1,400 have crossed the Channel this year, two and half times the rate of 2020’s 514 for the first three months of the year. On current trends that would mean migrant numbers would easily surpass the record 8,713 last year. Tony Smith, former director general of the Border Force, warned that smugglers would be exploiting the publicity over the Home Secretary’s crackdown on asylum last week to tell migrant they needed to cross in order to beat the new measures. “There will be an acceleration in the activity to get in under the wire before the Government does whatever it is going to do,” Mr Smith told The Telegraph. Alp Mehmet, chairman of Migration Watch UK, said: “More than double the number have crossed this year as came during January to March 2020. “These dangerous crossings will continue and go on increasing until it is made abundantly clear that the pathway to entering the UK illegally in order to claim asylum is closed.” It comes just a week after Priti Patel announced plans to deny illegal migrants the right to settle in the UK even if they are granted asylum, a move designed to crush people-smuggling. The Home Secretary is proposing that those who get asylum will only be granted "temporary protection status", which means they will be regularly reassessed for removal from the UK, have limited family reunion rights, and no access to benefits unless destitute. Only those who come to the UK through legitimate routes – via official Government refugee schemes from war zones or to escape persecution – will be entitled to indefinite leave to remain.
