Niantic Pikmin App Gameplay: What We Know So Far

Niantic Pikmin App Gameplay: What We Know So Far - iPhone

Details about what’s tentatively known as the Pikmin App, a smartphone AR game made in collaboration between Niantic and Nintendo, have emerged. The details come courtesy of the Pikmin App beta running in Singapore, according to Video Games Chronicle so you won’t be able to download the APK off the Google Play Store just yet.

The game starts off by giving players Pikmin Seedlings, which grow by absorbing Step Energy. Step Energy is gained by walking around with the Pikmin App installed on your smartphone. Pikmin App also allows players to name their individual Pikmin.

It features seven species of Pikmin that can be grown by players: Red, Blue, Yellow, Purple, White, Rock, and Winged.

While Pikmin App seems to have the same core as Niantic’s other outings (Pokemon Go and Ingress), where players have to roam around the world to get new Seedlings and fruits, it also features a game mode called Expeditions.

Expeditions involves sending out Pikmin to collect Seedlings and other items at places that the player has already visited themselves.

The closest thing Pikmin App has to a story, according to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, is the idea that we are living in a world that is already secretly inhabited by Pikmin.

Pikmin App doesn’t yet have a release date, and in fact, even the game’s name is likely a placeholder meant for beta testing before a better name is announced. It will likely be available on iOS and Android when it finally comes out.
