Probable delay in implementation of free water scheme: CAG report

Hyderabad: While the state government is preparing to launch its free water scheme in Greater Hyderabad, a CAG report revealed that 82% of water consumers have no water meters that could impede the implementation of the new scheme.

The CAG report submitted to the state assembly covered the period from 2013 to 2018. The state government declared the installation of water meters a condition to benefit from the free water scheme. The meter account of the beneficiary must be linked to his Aadhaar card.

During the last GHMC election, the government promised to provide 20,000 liters of water free of charge to every household.

The revelations made in the CAG report lead to skepticism about the implementation of the scheme.

According to the CAG report, the figures presented by the Water Board on the free water scheme are not based on facts. The report said the Water Board suffered 1209 million loss due to non-installation of water meters.

According to the report, the Water Board is obliged to supply 150 liters of water to each person daily, but the Board only delivers 71 liters of water.

The CAG report also referred to the non-coordination between Hyderabad Metro Waterworks and Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company. The lack of coordination between them leads to losses of R17.17 million.

A total of 1670 million Rs was spent on water supply from Krishna. Immediately after the approval of the scheme, the distribution company was not informed of the electricity demand, the report states.
