Fauci: Trump's tweets to "LIBERATE" states "like a punch to the chest"

Leading members of former President Trump's White House coronavirus task force opened up on the pressures of working in the administration in a CNN Special Report, broadcast Sunday.

Of note: In CNN's "Covid War: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out," Anthony Fauci recalled Trump tweeting "LIBERATE" blue states in order to push them to reopen "hit me like a punch to the chest," while Deborah Birx said "fault no.1" with the administration was it didn't "provide consistent messaging to the American people."

Other key takeaways: NIAID director Fauci also revealed to CNN's Sanjay Gupta that he and former White House coronavirus coordinator Birx had "good cop-bad cop" roles in the Trump administration — adding: "I was the bad cop, she was the good cop."

  • She added that she knew she was "being watched" during her time in the Trump administration.

  • "Everybody inside was waiting for me to make a misstep so that they could, I guess, remove me from the task force," Birx said.

For the record: While others spoke of pressure from Trump, former CDC chief Robert Redfield told Gupta, "I didn't have really difficult challenges with the White House, the challenges I had were with the office of" former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.

Almost the dawn of a different era," Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who also is taking a lead role in gun reform talks, told Axios.     There will be no censure for Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). Several of Collins' Republican colleagues in Congress who either voted to impeach or, like Collins, convict former President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot earlier this year drew the ire of their state Republican parties.     The report from the World Health Organization and China on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic will conclude that the most likely genesis of the new coronavirus was transmission to humans from bats through a second animal, The Associated Press reports, citing what appeared to be a near-final version obtained from an unidentified diplomat Monday. The least likely of the four hypotheses considered was an accidental leak of the virus from a lab in Wuhan, China, that studies coronaviruses in bats, the report found. Direct transmission of the coronavirus to humans is likely, though "the evolutionary distance between these bat viruses and SARS-CoV-2 is estimated to be several decades, suggesting a missing link," the draft report says. Very similar viruses have been found in pangolins, the researchers noted, though cats and mink are also potential carriers. The third scenario, "cold-chain" transmission through food products, was deemed possible but unlikely. The lab leak theory was judged "extremely unlikely." Dr. Robert Redfield, former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told CNN last week that in his opinion, the lab leak theory is the most likely, adding that "science will eventually figure it out." The findings in the final draft were expected, and Peter Ben Embarek, The Who expert who led this year's research mission to Wuhan, said Friday he expected the final report to be released to the public in the next few days. "The report's release has been repeatedly delayed, raising questions about whether the Chinese side was trying to skew the conclusions to prevent blame for the pandemic falling on China," AP reports.
