COIMBATORE: The Vadakkipalayam police on Monday registered an FIR against Tamil Nadu assembly deputy speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman’s son, Praveen, and six others for assaulting DMK functionary Parthasarathi Nambiraj.
The police registered a case for assaulting Nambiraj, abusing him using foul language and attempting to murder him by running him over with a car. The police said they were investigating the case.
In his police complaint, Nambiraj, the Okkalipalayam village panchayat president, said he was organising a meeting for Pollachi DMK candidate Dr Varadarajan near Madurai Veeran Temple as part of his campaign on Sunday.
As preparations were on, a car was seen parked next to the Masakali Amman Temple and men standing around it were shouting slogans against the DMK.
Nambiraj said he had approached the group of seven men, including Pollachi Jayaraman’s son Praveen. Praveen was sitting inside the car. He requested them to stop creating trouble as their candidate was scheduled to arrive any minute.
“They in return began abusing me using filthy language. Praveen said he was specifically sent by his father to spoil the meeting and stop it from happening,” said Nambiraj. “He also threatened to murder me by running his car over me,” he added.
Nambiraj said the verbal duel had soon resulted in the men assaulting him. He said Praveen had tried to run him over with his car, but the public seeing the squabble gathered around them soon, stopping any grievous injuries.
