Home burglary reported on Montgomery Road

Mar. 27—Detectives with the Huntsville Police Department are currently investigating a burglary, which they say occurred Friday in the 3700 block of Montgomery Road.

Police say that an unknown suspected entered the residence through a window and stole a chainsaw, an x-box, a television and a shotgun. The items hold a total value just under $1,000.

Huntsville Police Department spokesman Lt. Jim Barnes said that officers were still processing the scene Friday morning.

    Satellogic/Handout via ReutersThe cargo ship that has blocked the Suez Canal since Tuesday—and epitomized the mood of a battered and exhausted public—could be freed on Saturday night, some optimistic reports suggest.But, as the ship’s calamitous journey has so far indicated, there is plenty that could still go wrong.Yukito Higaki, president of the Japanese company that owns the Ever Given, said he hoped that a weekend high tide and the dislodging efforts already underway would help to refloat the ship, NBC reported. He also apologized for the multi-billion dollar mess. “We apologize for blocking the traffic and causing the tremendous trouble and worry to many people, including the involved parties,” Higaki said.Releasing Container Ship From Suez Canal Could Capsize ItThe blockade on one of the busiest shipping routes in the world has stalled hundreds of vessels and triggered an unfurling trade crisis. The jam has held up nearly $10 billion in trade each day, according to The New York Times, and added another layer of stress onto an industry already kneecapped by pandemic-induced lockdowns.Bloomberg reports that Ikea is among the slew of companies facing supply-chain issues, which is stressful news to anyone in the market for a cheap bookshelf. The Swedish company is reportedly “considering all options to ensure availability of products.” Construction equipment company Caterpillar “is said to be considering airlifting products if necessary.”In some positive news, the 1,312-foot long Ever Given ship had moved slightly as of Saturday morning, Reuters reports. And the ship’s rudder finally began to operate on Friday night.“The locomotives are now full force and the ship is starting to operate its machines,” Hend Fathy Hussein, a spokeswoman for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, wrote on Facebook. “[B]ut it hasn’t been floating yet.”Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, said in a press conference on Saturday that he “could not say” when the ship might be free. Unusually strong winds continue to hinder attempts to move it. Hundreds of ships wait in the Red Sea as the Ever Given remains lodged in the Suez Canal. High winds were initially blamed for the grounding, but Rabie said on Saturday that human error may have played a part, too.“The weather was one reason, but maybe there was a technical error, or a human error,” he said.Workers are currently digging out the stuck ship and using tugboats to dislodge it. A worst case scenario, Rabie said, would be removing some of the cargo to lighten the load.The Ever Given has a capacity for 20,000 containers; according to the BBC removing that weight could take “weeks” and require “specialist equipment.” If the ship is not freed on Saturday, the Times reported that its “best chance” might come on Monday, when a high tide is predicted that could helpfully push up water levels.The canal provides a thoroughfare for around 15 percent of global shipping traffic.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Subscribe for free.High tide is expected at around 10 p.m. local time, according to CNN."More [tugboats] will arrive on Sunday if the latest attempt fails," BBC writes.What they're saying: Osama Rabie, the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, said in a press conference on Saturday that he could not offer an exact timeline for when the ship would be dislodged, AP notes.Hend Fathy Hussein, the spokeswoman for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, wrote in a Facebook post Saturday that the ship’s rudder had started moving again, the Post reports."The locomotives are now full force and the ship is starting to operate its machines, but it hasn’t been floating yet," Hussein said, per the Post.What's next: Rabie said that if pulling the ship fails to move it, rescue teams might have to remove some containers to lighten the load, per BBC.Like this article?     ReutersWhile the global shipping industry bleeds $400 million each hour the massive Ever Given container ship stays stuck in the sand of the Suez Canal, an elite salvage team on the ground in Egypt is facing an entirely different problem: How do you make a top-heavy ship stuck in shifting sands weigh less without capsizing it?“They’ll need a full survey of the seabed and canal bottom to see what the extent of grounding is,” Nick Sloane, the salvage master who miraculously led the removal of the Costa Concordia cruise ship in 2014 off the island of Giglio, told The Daily Beast. “The worst case is that the ship is presently supported over her bow and stern areas, meaning possible sags in the middle.” Those sags could lead to the ship splitting in two, spilling the fuel and cargo—which includes COVID-19 supplies like respirators and personal protection equipment made in China—into the canal, making it temporarily impassable. “The risk is that it could also become top-heavy and capsize,” Captain John Konrad, founder and CEO of the gCaptain shipping industry website, said. “And that would be catastrophic.”But before anyone can even think of lightening the massive vessel—which is 1,312 feet long and 194 feet wide, with 50 feet of the ship below the water—they would need to download the schematics of the ship and run them through a series of computer-generated programs to determine what offloading will do to the balance. Then they would have to somehow get a maritime crane to Egypt since the country does not own one tall enough to reach the top of the Ever Given’s 20,000 containers.The information used to determine how to lighten the 200,000 metric-ton ship enough to nudge it out of the sand, which buries the vessel a little more with each passing tide, will be largely based on the ship’s own records—assuming they are correct and were not fudged to pass what the Maritime Anti Corruption Network once called the most corrupt port system in the world. Just how this monster ship, which is around the size of the Empire State Building, got stuck in the canal’s riprap or sandbanks is also up for debate. The ordeal has already become the subject of a number of memes and websites, with plenty of parody Twitter accounts churning out memes of the massive excavator, which, next to the ship, looks like a child's toy chipping away at the sand on the vessel’s bow.The Suez Canal, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, is reportedly blocked because someone accidentally got stuck with their giant container ship. It is owned by the Japanese company Shoei Kisen Kaisha, which has apologized profusely for the rather expensive inconvenience. They say heavy winds knocked the ship into the sandbanks, but data so far shows it was also traveling 13 knots in an 8-knot speed zone when the accident happened, according to Konrad. Several salvors have also said the most likely cause was a blackout power outage that compromised steering just as the wind gust came up. Coincidentally, this same ship was involved in an accident in Hamburg in 2019, when its owners rammed into a ferry and destroyed it. They had blamed the accident on a loss of steering power and high winds back then, too. Salvors say the next opportunity to move the ship will be during spring tides on Sunday and Monday.
