80 rowdies held ahead of election

CHENNAI: A total of 80 historysheeters were nabbed in North zone on Friday morning ahead of the April 6 assembly election.
The raid was conducted as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident ahead of the elections. The list and photographs of the historysheeters and fingerprints were collected and they were warned against indulging in any illegal activities during the elections.
In Tiruvannamalai, 18 men were arrested while in Kancheepuram,17 were held.
Police have been carrying on checks in lodges and mansions across North zone areas for the past few days. More check-posts have been erected to keep an eye on illegal weapons.
Last month, the city police formed special teams to nab 448 active criminals from the city. Police arrested about 1,540 criminals, while 1,751 rowdies gave an undertaking not to indulge in any criminal activities.
The law enforcers have arrested 21,289 rowdies across the state, including166 in the ‘A’ and ‘A-plus’ category, a senior officer said.
